Day 18

Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.  But that is not the way you learned Christ!— assuming that you have heard about Him and were taught in Him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

Ephesians 4:17-24 ESV

Before you begin to pray, take a deep breath and quiet your thoughts. Focus on being in the presence of God. Thank God for hearing your prayers. Then reread the scripture we will study next Sunday, Ephesians 4:17-24. Read it slowly, recognizing that God is speaking to you through His Word. If God puts something specific on your heart, pray about that today.

Thank. Paul tells us in verse 24 that our new self is “created after the likeness of God.” Reflect on that for a moment. How thankful are you that you have been given the  opportunity to become a new creation, a new self, imprinted with God’s character? Thank God for His generosity today.

Adore. Let’s adore God for his generosity! From the beauty of nature to the laughter of children to the gift of a new life, God has lavished gifts on us.

Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father,
who created all the lights in the heavens.
He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.

James 1:17 NLT

Confess. God’s generosity is overwhelming. His greatest gift is that He sent His Son to die for our sins. Thinking about such lavish generosity leads us to consider the times we have not shared the good gifts God gave us with others. Confess to God the times you have been selfish. He is waiting to forgive you.

Global Church: For 19 years, North Korea has been considered the most dangerous place in the world to be a Christian. Pray for the Christians in North Korea today. Pray they are protected from those who would persecute, oppress and kill them. Pray for strength and courage for those who suffer in prisons, labor camps and remote areas. Pray God provides a miraculous way for them to worship him. “Let the groans of the prisoners come before you; according to your great power, preserve those doomed to die!” Psalm 79:11

Self. God is listening. He loves you. Pray for any specific needs that you or your family have.

Day 17

Thank. Verse 23 of this week’s scripture tells us that when we put off our old self we are to be “renewed in the spirit of your minds.” This is a God-powered transformation. The spirit at work within us gives us the strength we need to be more like Jesus. Thank God today for transforming you into a new person. Thank Him for the people in your life that push you to be more like Jesus.

Adore. Our God is so good! He desires that we become more like Him and gives us His Spirit so that we may call on Him for the strength and wisdom we need to change. Let’s adore God for His goodness.

Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise!
Give thanks to Him; bless His name!
For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever,
and His faithfulness to all generations.

Psalm 100: 4-5

Confess. The goodness of God is beyond our understanding and we cannot attain it. Still, we are called to try to show Christlike goodness. In our striving, we often fall short. Confess a time when you had the opportunity to show kindness to someone and you chose not to. God will forgive you. He loves you. He is so very good.

Others.

CU Church: Pray for our Next Steps Initiative that works with young men transitioning from high school to adulthood (college, trade school, jobs.) Pray for the staff (Miles) and volunteers who manage the program and mentor the men. Pray that the young men in the program make the very best use of this opportunity to learn and shape their futures in a way that honors God.
Community:  Pray for the high schools in your community. Choose a specific group to pray for (students, teachers, administrators, support staff) or pray for a specific need you know exists.
Global Church: Pray for people worldwide who are suffering oppression because of their faith, race, culture, gender or socio-economic status. Pray that God delivers them from their oppressors. “Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people, from the deceitful and unjust man deliver me!” Psalm 43:1

Self. God is listening. He loves you. Pray for any specific needs that you or your family have.

Day 16

Thank. Verse 21 of this week’s scripture tells us that “the truth is in Jesus.”  Praise the Lord that in a world where we’re told truth can change, God gave us the truth that never changes. We find that truth in Jesus. Thank God today for Jesus and for the truth Jesus teaches us. Then thank Him for someone in your life who pointed you toward Jesus.

Adore. God sent His only son to die for us. But before He died, Jesus lived a life on earth and taught us how to live. Praise God today for sending His Son and praise Him for your bible, the place you can go to learn all that Jesus taught us. We are so blessed to hold the Word of God in our hands.

Consider how I love your precepts!
Give me life according to your steadfast love.
The sum of your word is truth,
and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.

Psalm 119: 159-160

Confess. Acknowledging the sacredness of the Bible leads us to acknowledge that we do not turn to our Bible as often as we should. Confess to God if you sometimes turn away from reading His Word. Commit to opening your bible and seeking truth from your Creator rather than seeking truth in the world.

Others.

CU Church: Pray for our Special Needs Ministry. Pray that we can provide a welcoming and safe environment for people with special needs where they can meet friends and learn about God. Pray for the monthly gathering at the YMCA and for its leader, Emilie.
Community: Pray for the middle or junior high schools in your community. Choose a specific group to pray for (students, teachers, administrators, support staff) or pray for a specific need you know exists.
Global Church: Pray for the Rafiki Foundation. Rafiki has established 10 Training Villages within the African countries of Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Bible study and classical Christian education are carried out in each Village through five programs: Bible Study, Education, Teacher Training, Orphan Care, and Widows.rafikifoundation.org

Self. God is listening. He loves you. Pray for any specific needs that you or your family have.

Day 15

Then read the scripture we will study next Sunday, Ephesians 4:17-24. Read it slowly, recognizing that God is speaking to you through His Word. If God puts something specific on your heart, pray about that today.

Thank. God changes everything, including the way we live once we know Christ. Thank God for the example He gave us in the life of Jesus and thank Him for someone in your life who has been a role model for your faith journey.

Adore. Our human nature leads us to sin, but God offers us change. Through His infinite love He sacrificed His Son in order to give us the opportunity to “put on the new self.”  Let’s adore God for His mercy and love.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

1 Peter 1:3

Confess. The offer of a new self is one of God’s greatest gifts to us, but if we’re honest, we often cling to our sinful ways and try to hide from God. Confess to God the times you have tried to hide from him. God forgives a contrite heart. He loves you.

Others.

CU Church: Pray for our High School ministry. Pray that staff (Adam) and volunteers who work with our youth be given the message that God would have them share with students. Pray that they have the energy and strength to support our students. Pray that our high schoolers hear and receive the gospel message and that they have the strength to share that message with others.
Community: Pray for the elementary schools in your community. Choose a specific group to pray for (students, teachers, administrators, support staff) or pray for a specific need you know exists.
Global Church:  Pray for the unity of the global church. Jesus himself taught us in John 17:20-21, “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” Pray that all believers are one so that the world believes in Jesus.

Self. God is listening. He loves you. Pray for any specific needs that you or your family have.

Day 14

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call- one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it says,

“When He ascended on high He led a host of captives,

and He gave gifts to men.”(In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that He had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) And He gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Ephesians 4:1-16 ESV

Before you begin to pray, take a deep breath and quiet your thoughts. Focus on being in the presence of God. Thank God for hearing your prayers. Then reread the scripture we will study next Sunday, Ephesians 4:1-16. Read it slowly, recognizing that God is speaking to you through His Word. If God puts something specific on your heart, pray about that today.

Thank. Verse 10 says, “He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.” We can take great comfort knowing that Christ has descended to the depths and ascended far above the heavens. Our God fills all things. He is everywhere! Thank God today that He is everywhere. There is no place you are alone!

Adore. God “fills all things.” What a glorious thought! We are never far from God. Let’s praise God today for finding us wherever we are and for loving us in all circumstances.

Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?

If I ascend to heaven, You are there!  If I make my bed in Sheol, You are there!

If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea

even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.

Psalm 139:7-10

Confess. If God is everywhere and always available to us, why don’t we seek Him more often? Reflecting on God’s presence in all things makes us realize that at times we turn away from Him. Let’s confess to God that we sometimes flee from His presence and then turn toward Him with the assurance we are forgiven.

Others.

Self. God is listening. He loves you. Pray for any specific needs that you or your family have.

Day 13

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call- one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Then reread the scripture we will study next Sunday, Ephesians 4:1-16. Read it slowly, recognizing that God is speaking to you through His Word. If God puts something specific on your heart, pray about that today.

Thank. Throughout this week’s scripture passage, Paul emphasizes that we must do all things in love. We are to bear with one and another in love (vs. 2), speak the truth in love (vs. 15) and build up the body of Christ in love (vs. 16). Today thank God for someone who demonstrates Paul’s instruction, who patiently loves you through tough times or speaks truth to you with love.

Adore. All love comes from God. It is the fabric of his Being. It is at the core of all He does. Praise God today for His infinite love that He pours out to us through grace and mercy.

Let all that I am praise the Lord;

with my whole heart, I will praise His holy name.

Let all that I am praise the Lord;

may I never forget the good things He does for me.

He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases.

He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies.

Psalm 103:1-4 NLT

Confess. Reflecting on Paul’s words causes us to realize that often we don’t reflect God’s love as we love one another.  Ask God to forgive you for the times you fall short of Christ’s command, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” John 13:34

Thank. “And He gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ…” (verses 11-12) We have thanked God for giving us purpose. Let’s also give God thanks for the people, the apostles, the prophets, the shepherds and the teachers, who show us the way. Thank God for a specific person who taught you about Jesus.

Adore. Like yesterday, this verse reminds us that God has a perfect design, not only for the workings of the physical world, but also for the workings of the body of Christ. His design is marvelous. Our place in His design is humbling. Let’s adore God for His infinite wisdom.

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!

How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways!

Romans 11:33

Confess. As we praise God for His wisdom and the perfection of His design, we should recognize the times we fail to show humility in light of his glory. Confess the times you have behaved as though you have the wisdom of God. Turn toward God and humbly ask for forgiveness.

Thank. In the scripture for the week, Paul talks to the Ephesians about maintaining “the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” He also says, “There is one body and one Spirit.” How marvelous that He made us to be unique individuals, capable of a personal relationship with our God, while at the same time giving us unity in the Spirit and oneness in the body of Christ! Thank God today for His glorious design: He made you the way you are, uniquely gifted as an individual with a distinct purpose as a member of the body of Christ.

Adore. God’s design is truly awe inspiring. From the intricate design of our human bodies, to the magnificent design of the heavens and the earth, to the grace filled design of our relationship with Him, there is no greater mind than that of our God’s. Let’s praise Him today as the perfect designer.

Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these?

He who brings out the starry host one by one

and calls forth each of them by name.

Because of His great power and mighty strength,

not one of them is missing.

Isaiah 40:26

Confess. God is the creator and sustainer of all things, yet He wants to be in a personal relationship with each of us. Remembering the times that we turn away from such a profound offer of relationship leads us naturally to confession. Turn toward God and confess the times you have not sought to be near Him. He is waiting for you.

Thank. In verse 2, Paul urges us to walk “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.” It’s hard to imagine what our lives would look like if we followed that advice. Thankfully, God gave us a perfect example to follow in the person of Jesus. Thank God today for Jesus, for His earthly life lived with humility, gentleness, patience and love.

Adore. Paul says Jesus “descended into the lower regions, the earth.” What great humility our God has to live as a man. Praise God for His humility today, that He came to serve and not be served.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

for I am gentle and humble in heart,

and you will find rest for your souls.

Matthew 11:29 NIV

Confess. Humility does not come easily to most of us. It is not in our nature nor is it celebrated in today’s culture. Confess to God the times you have lacked humility. Ask God to help you learn to be more humble and He will show you grace.

Thank. Verse 8 of this week’s scripture says, “But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” One of the things we can learn from that verse is that God’s grace is given out personally. He gives grace to “each one of us.” Thank God today that He knows you personally.

Adore. Today, let’s adore God for his grace. We receive grace in the forgiveness of our sins through Christ’s work on the cross. We receive grace in everyday ways: the warmth of a campfire; the beauty of fall leaves; the hug of a close friend. God gives us grace through our gifts too, each of us bestowed with different gifts that are integral to the body of Christ. Praise God today for His grace, for the many gifts He lavishes upon us.

Let us praise God for His glorious grace,

for the free gift He gave us in His dear Son!

 Ephesians 1:6-8 GNT

Confess. We did not earn nor do we deserve God’s grace. That realization leads us naturally to a place of confession and repentance. Turn toward our loving Father as you confess your sins.
